Hilary Duff in CosmoGirl magazine
They've both moved on since their breakup last year, but Hilary Duff and her ex, Joel Madden, still e-mail all the time, she says in a new interview with CosmoGirl! magazine.
"Joel was my boyfriend for two years and I loved him - he was a very important part of my life," she tells the magazine. "All that stuff about the age difference between us being the reason we broke up is just not true; I never felt the age difference. Breaking up was just something that I felt needed to happen between us
… we e-mail all the time now and are at a really good place."Duff, whose new album, "Dignity," was released this month, says that even though she and Madden seemed very different, they actually had a lot in common.
"People thought we were an unlikely couple, but we really weren't that different," she says. "After two months, I didn't even see his tattoos anymore, because that's not who he is. He used to say, 'I don't think there are too many people out there who really get you, but I do.' And he did. I could be stupid, silly, funny, or crazy, and he got it. He gave me a sense of confidence and independence I didn't have before."
Madden is currently dating "Simple Life" star Nicole Richie. Rumors circulated that songs Duff's album - including the song Gypsy Woman - were about Richie. Duff told USA Today recently that Gypsy Woman is actually about the other woman who broke up her parent's marriage.
"It's interesting - half the record was written when I was in a relationship with Joel, and the other half was written after we'd broken up. So together, the album is just really personal," she says. "So many of the songs are about things my family has gone through. I was scared to write about that stuff at first, but then I thought, 'Why try to make it seem like I have a perfect life when I don't'?"
Duff also fesses up to being insecure about her body and admits that she got a little too skinny recently.
"I have the same insecurities about my body that every girl has, and I made a conscious choice to get in shape. I've always been a junk food eater, but I started paying more attention to what I put in my body and cut out foods like pizza, chicken fingers, and french fries," she says. "But I hit a period when I got too skinny. I wasn't too obsessed with it, but I did learn that there have to be days when you just don't think about it.’"

Hilary Duff admits that she may have gone overboard on her recent 'dessert or bread' diet because she lost way too much weight.
She says, "I made a conscious choice to get in shape. Not only is she edging out frothy bubblegum pop in favor of sleek electro grooves and songs inspired by the exotic decade she just missed (you know, the '80s), but the 19-year-old singer-actress is also nursing a broken heart with appropriately darkened hair and fingernails to match. Recorded while coming out of a long-term relationship with Good Charlotte front man Joel Madden (now hobnobbing with Nicole Richie), Duff could provide us with the moment we've all been waiting for on this disc -- the moment the teenage star comes of age.
Q: You started out making this album while you were still going out with Joel Madden. Did you have to hurry up and write a bunch of mean songs after you broke up?
A: That was a big question when I finished the record and I had these songs. I had broken up with Joel, and I thought to myself, "I have all these songs about being in love and it being great, and they don't make sense anymore." But everyone deals with that. There are people in relationships. There are people going through a breakup. There are people going through all of those things. So I feel like I got to cover a lot of ground, and everybody could relate.
Q: Do you think the black hair brought out the sad gothic side of you?
A: My mom thinks it made me more independent and daring. She says she wants me to go back to a blonde so she can tell me what to do. Actually, I do agree with that, but sometimes it takes someone else to point it out. On a more superficial note, I feel it was really hard for me to find outfits at first, and I felt like I had to change my makeup and everything. It's a big change, but I like it a lot. I don't know if it has anything to do with the record.
Q: Were your parents secretly happy that you broke up with Joel, you know, because his arms are covered in tattoos, he's so much older and he wears baseball caps the wrong way?
A: No, my mom loves him. She misses cooking for him and his brother Benji. Even from the beginning, I did warn her before they met that he has a lot of tattoos and he's much older than me, but my mom knows that I'm smart. She's always trusted me, and we've always had a very honest relationship. She never wanted us to break up. She loves him. My dad might be a different story.
Q: I'm with Dad. What did you see in Madden?
A: He's a really good person and he treated me really well, but it was just kind of time. I had been in a relationship for 2 1/2 years, since I was 16, and it wasn't fair to him because he was going to be ready for marriage in a few years, and I was going to be ready for something else. It was a hard decision to make, but I'm a really compassionate person and I care so much about other people that sometimes I put that before myself. I just thought it wasn't fair to him anymore.
Q: Are you sure you're really 19?
A: It's funny, because everyone's watched me grow up and make mistakes and do the things that people are normally embarrassed by. I try not to be embarrassed. I still screw up and I do dumb things, but I do learn from them. I feel lucky to have this job and this crazy career, but I feel so normal inside.

Hilary talks about Joel and new album
In an interview Hilary talked about her relationship with Joel Madden, and her new album 'Dignity'.

"With a new album, Dignity, out now to promote, Hilary Duff is opening up about her ex-boyfriend, Good Charlotte singer Joel Madden, and his famous for nothing new girlfriend, Nicole Richie.
Says the Duffster. "We're not great friends like we were. We had a great relationship, and I will always care about him and want him to be happy. It just sucks that because he's dating someone who's a personality, too, people try and pit us against each other."
While some might think the "other woman" in the song Gypsy, which Duff co-wrote with her sister Haylie, it's actually about her parents' divorce, which happened last year and the family kept very quiet.
"This is so hard to talk about," Duff says of her parents' bitter split. "For some reason, I was embarrassed that my family wasn't perfect and that some woman had broken it up."
The song Stranger was also inspired by Hilary's turbulent family life in the past 12 months.
"Stranger is a song I wrote about how my mom must feel around my dad," she says. "I made it seem like it was about a relationship I was in, because I didn't want people to know about my parents. But I've realized that so many people can relate to what I've gone through."
Of her own relationship with Madden, Duff adds, "Everyone made a big deal out of him being older. I was, like, 16 and he was 25. But I didn't think it was a big thing. I didn't go to high school; how could I meet someone my age? What would we talk about?"
