Duff still a role model as her music, acting grow up

"(...) Duff takes a swipe at the Hiltons of the world in the title song of her album, singing, "It's all about you, we got it . . . Check that phone, there's a club to close / Where's your dignity?"

"It's not just celebrities, it's other people who have a lot of money and think thatthey are entitled or should be treated better," Duff said in a recent phone interview.

Duff said she works hard to stay out of the eye of the paparazzi who stalk celebrities for photos of their private lives.

"I try to stay away from it, but it's not completely possible," she said. "You have to live your life. They all know where I live, so on weekends they'll be up by my house.

"It can be embarrassing. I don't want to worry about the way I look all the time."
Whether she likes it or not, the Houston-born Duff knows many young women and their parents look up to her due to her clean image. At times, she's let those high expectations get to her.

"I went through a period of about a year where I was very scared to mess up or do anything wrong," she said. "I want to grow as a person, and I want to make mistakes. I'm human, too. So I think I've gotten to a place where . . . I'm really being myself."

Her clothing line is designed to let women be themselves.

"You don't want to dress to impress a certain guy," she said. "We can be so insecure, and we should accept our flaws and love ourselves."

Duff is putting her on-screen star power to the test with War, Inc., a political satire expected to premiere in the fall. The film takes place in a fictional war-torn country where Americans try to profit from the misery.

"We're totally Americanizing this place," Duff said. "We come in acting like we're the heroes and trick them.

"My character is an eastern European pop star, and she's super-cheesy (in) the way she acts and dances - kind of overtly sexual, but she's like a child. She doesn't come off as a good person."

Duff enjoyed portraying a character that is so different and sees the movie as a turning point.

"I'm not saying that I don't want to do movies that are more for everyone . . . but it's fun to get out and do something totally different."

It depends on my mood. Last night my sister and I just stayed in and had a meal, had a swim and watched a film, and it was so nice to just chill out. Other times I want to dance and stay out late.

Hilary Duff Tries to Maintain Her Dignity

Here's an interview where Hilary talks about a lot of things that i'm sure that you wanna know.

Topics include the title song from Dignity, her new CD, and how
much the tune is, and isn’t, about scolding misbehaving celebrities; the disc’s
jacket photo, in which its name is superimposed over a photo of Duff looking
like genuine royalty, as opposed to the kind that gets slimed on Nickelodeon’s
Kids Choice Awards; how songs about her parents breakup have been wrongly
assumed to be comments on the Madden-Richie match; her contributions to
Dignity’s songwriting, and her contention that the co-writing credits she
receives are fully earned; her fragrance and clothing lines; her resistance to
being seen as a brand as opposed to a human being; and War Inc., her forthcoming
movie, which actually sounds like something people will fully functioning brains
might want to see.

Westword (Michael Roberts): There’s been a
lot of talk about the title and the cover of your new CD, Dignity. Some people
have interpreted it as a comment about other pop stars and celebrities who came
into the spotlight around the same time you did. Has that been misinterpreted?
Or was that what you were going for?

Hilary
Duff: You know what? When I wrote the song, it wasn’t like… It’s funny.
I’d never really sat down and written a whole record before, like I did with
this one. And I took a lot of time off, where I wasn’t working on a million
other things while I was making the record, like I had done in the past. I was
spending a lot of time in Los Angeles and just kind of enjoying my time off and
seeing what came up and what experiences I had – for writing, you know. And I
think living in L.A. in general is really what that song is about. Yeah, maybe
it’s a little bit about celebrities and young people who run in the same genre
of work that I’m in. It is kind of a judgmental song. I’m really not that much
of a judgmental person. I’m not, like, bashing anyone in particular. But
definitely it’s a song questioning people’s dignity and what they think is okay
and what’s not okay, and the way Los Angeles is very superficial. That’s what
that song is about. And it’s not necessarily just celebrities. It’s people that
live there that think money can get you anything you want, and you think you
have the authority because you have money, and you’re treating people
disrespectfully. It’s about all of that, so I’d say it’s not necessarily
completely aimed at just celebrities.

WW:
Still, the image on the CD’s jacket: There’s a difference between the way you
present yourself there and the way we see fill-in-the-blank celebrity on TMZ.com
and Entertainment Tonight. Was that a message you were sending? Be dignified.
Don’t be the way a lot of people are being presented these days?

HD: On the cover of my record?

WW: Yeah.

HD: You mean the
picture?

WW: The picture, yes.

HD: I don’t know. I think it’s a very classy looking
picture. I just liked that it was my face, and it’s just me. It’s pretty much
like… I don’t know. The record was so personal for me. The record cover is a big
closeup of my face. So it’s not like I have no clothes on or I’m trying to do
something really edgy or provocative. It’s just me.

WW:
So for you, it wasn’t so much that you were trying to say with that photo,
“Everyone should be dignified as this,” or “I’m going to be dignified even if
other celebrities aren’t going to be.” It was more, “This is the real me.”

HD: Yeah. It’s not about anybody else. It’s my record
and I would not ever want to try and make someone like me or say this is how you
should be. I’m just saying this is how I am and this is how I want to be.

WW: It’s a very serious image, and there are some
series themes on the CD. But there are also a lot of lighthearted moments. Is
that something you want people to know – that it’s not only a somber record, but
an entertaining one as well?

HD: It’s funny. When I
have done some interviews in the past where people were like, “Explain this
song, and explain this song.” Well, all the songs are pretty serious. All the
subject matter is pretty personal. I had a pretty tough year last year, so, of
course, when you’re writing a record, the only things to write about are the
things you feel the most, you know? But even though it is serious, and the
subject matter, some of it is pretty deep, the music isn’t. The music is fun.
It’s like a total dance record. No matter what, you feel like moving and dancing
when you hear it. But when you listen to the words, it means something.

Finally, someone is showing these Hollywood wrecking-balls that you can grab the
media spotlight in positive ways. It doesn’t always have to be about endangering lives or nervous breakdowns. Other females in the entertainment industry are continually crashing their image in lows never before thought possible, and Duff’s looking and feeling better than ever.

The 19 year-old singer/songwriter/actress has just started her own national tour for her latest pop album, Dignity. She graced the covers of five magazines in July, and none of them were candid shots of a drunken Hilary, or a strung-out Hilary, or a tear-streaked, underwear-flashing, I’m-a-walking-disaster photo. Even after a double-blow last year, featuring the break-up of her two-and-a-half-year relationship with Joel from the band Good Charlotte, as well as her parents’ decision to file for divorce.

“I’m not that person who goes to fancy restaurants all the time and wants to be seen everywhere,” Duff said in a recent interview with Seventeen Magazine. “Yes, it’s fun every once in a while, but I’m not going to go places where I know I’m going to be photographed.” It’s about time someone was able to handle the responsibility. And Duff’s ability to do this is what makes her far more interesting than the many, many others who aren’t up for the job. The most dramatic measures she’s taken lately involve going on a severe health kick. While she’s previously been scorned in the public eye for being both overweight and underweight, she recently has gotten into an incredibly sane health regime. The new-and-improved Hilary Duff diet includes balancing all types of foods, including carbs, as well as pilates four times a week.

"I want to inspire people to have a healthy mindset,” she told Shape Magazine last month. “Everyone needs food that gives them energy they need to be active — and they should have fun.”

“A lot of people keep me in check,” Duff says to Maxim’s Alison Prato. “It’s not exactly hard being so young and having so much — I’m thankful. But young people in Hollywood get so used to being told ‘yes’ all the time, and that’s not reality. When you get everything you want at a young age, you become bored. You’re like, ‘What’s next? What else is there?’ I think this might be the problem.”

In Duff’s case, she’s got a solid background in self-entertainment. She seems to have a solid enough head on her shoulders that she can find new and interesting ways to challenge herself. Making bigger movies, writing better songs; there are many places she can take herself that don’t include celebrity rehab or jail.

The songs on her latest album, Dignity, were a direct product of her break-up with Joel and dealing with her parents’ divorce. She decided to channel all the emotion into an artistic creation instead of drowning it all in substance abuse. This alone may prove why she is thriving right now; Duff may be an actual artist.

“When we broke up I’d already written a few songs about us, and I was like, ‘Can I use this stuff now? It’s so personal,’” Duff tells Prato. “But I ended up using everything because I wanted the album to be honest. I’m not perfect, and I don’t have a perfect family. The album lets people inside my life — not the life everybody thinks they know or that they read about, but my real life.” There’s something to be respected for the fact that she not only wrote her own songs, but they seem to be curtain-less windows into her life and her views.

“The song [“Dignity”] is about people living in LA,” Duff tells Prato, “and how easy it is to lose yourself here. Sometimes this town is so shocking. People think they can throw money around and get whatever they want. Dignity isn’t something you’re born with — it’s something you have to work on.”

Duff isn’t one to hang out with the typical Hollywood crowd. She’s usually found with her sister and her best friend. Being an outsider never had so many positive effects before. It takes a real backbone to resist the Hollywood “in-crowd,” and that’s why we can be certain that Duff is one of the stronger stars in the LA atmosphere.

Duff Sends Congrats to Joel Madden & Nicole Richie

It appears Hilary Duff's new romance with hockey player Mike Comrie has
mellowed her a bit. Hot stuff from Us Weekly magazine reports that it has
learned Hilary has extended an electronic olive branch of sorts to ex Joel
Madden, 28, and his four-months-pregnant love, Nicole Richie, 25, following the
couple's August 2 media blitz.

appeared on Good Morning America, Hilary breezily texted Joel congratulations on
the pregnancy, and Joel warmly responded," a source tells the weekly
entertainment magazine.

The singer-actress, 19, now on tour in Canada in support of her hit
album Dignity, has been dating New York Islanders player Mike Comrie, 26, for
several weeks. The hockey star even jetted to Vancouver to catch Duff's
August 3 Pacific Coliseum show, where he watched from backstage and chatted with
Duff's sis, Haylie, 22.

"Hilary plays it coy, but she's really into him. He's the first
guy she's been serious about since splitting with Joel," says the insider.
"He's like Joel – he looks tough, but he's a really nice guy. They're just
great together.
